HAITI
After the earthquake struck Haiti on January 12th, 2010 I knew immediately that I wanted to help, but I didn't know how exactly that would happen. When a good friend of mine told me about an organization called Hands On Disaster Response, as it was known then. I did a little research, and by the end of the week I was set to leave for Haiti and volunteer with the organization, which is now called All Hands Volunteers. I spent 5 weeks during the summer after the earthquake, in a town called Leogane. Most days were spent with sledgehammer or shovel in hand, removing rubble to make a slab big enough for a temporary shelter, though there were plenty of other projects to be a part of. I managed to take my camera with me as often as I could. I could not believe the devastation that was inflicted by the earthquake, but at the same time Haiti was so beautiful. The people have more resilience than I have ever seen. They are among the friendliest people I have ever met, and are very welcoming and kind. Again, I was reminded of the power of staying positive even through the hardest days.
